you guys do the stuff P.I.'s do on TV?
If you are referring to breaking and entering, obtaining credit reports without authorization, arranging confrontational meetings, and becoming romantically involved with clients, the answer is a resounding NO! These are placed on private investigators by Hollywood writers trying to create excitement, they have no basis in reality. The Investigative profession is full of hard working, honest, law-abiding individuals who are aware of the legalities involved in obtaining information. In most states, investigators are regulated by a state regulatory board and any illegal behavior could mean the termination of their license, and possibly, the end of their careers.
